The film censor, Mr Sheamus Smith, has passed the controversial new version of Lolita with an over-18 certificate and without any cuts. The film will go on release in Ireland late next month, writes Michael Dwyer, Film Correspondent.

Mr Smith also passed The General, John Boorman's film about the Dublin criminal, Martin Cahill. After viewing the film yesterday, Mr Smith passed the film uncut, with an over-15 certificate. The General will be released in Ireland on May 29th.

The new film version of the Vladimir Nabokov novel, Lolita is directed by Adrian Lyne, the British film-maker who made 9 1/2 Weeks, Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal.
