A new centre-left interim coalition government is set to take office in Iceland tomorrow and will propose April 25th as the date for an early election, the head of one of the coalition parties said today.
Steingrimur Sigfusson, head of the Left-Green party, made the comments after the Progressive party said it would support the incoming minority coalition in parliament.
The Left-Green party is forming a coalition with the Social Democrats who will be the senior partner.
"If everything goes as planned now a new government will take over on Sunday afternoon," Mr Sigfusson told reporters.
The Social Democrats and Left-Green Party aim to take charge of Iceland after protests helped topple the previous centre-right Prime Minister Geir Haarde. He became the first leader to fall as a direct result of the global credit crunch.
The crisis, sparked after Iceland's fast expanding banks collapsed under a weight of debt, forced Iceland to take a $10 billion International Monetary Fund-led rescue package and caused widespread anger.
Mr Haarde of the Independence Party quit on Monday after weeks of protests, which eventually turned violent.
