BERGEN - The US Secretary of Defence, Mr William Perry, shrugging off Russia's virulent opposition, said yesterday that Nato's expansion to take in former communist enemies would go ahead next year.

"At a summit next year, several countries will be invited to start accession talks," he told reporters after a two day informal meeting of the alliance's 16 defence ministers.
