NATO has approved a list of eight specific measures the US wants it to take as part of a joint military response to the September 11th attacks, NATO Secretary General George Robertson said.

NATO will supply AWACS aircraft and "elements of its standing naval force" in the eastern Mediterranean, as well as according US rights for overflights, access to ports and refuelling and other facilities at airfields on NATO territory.

Nato is also offering intelligence sharing and increased security support for America in relation to the anti-terror campaign.

In response, NATO activated Article 5 of its founding treaty, enabling it to provide such aid.
