An international study into the impact of asthma among sufferers in Western Europe

will include a survey amongst 5000 Irish households.

Ireland has the fourth highest rate of asthma in the world and ranks fourth in Europe.

It is the most common chronic illness in Irish society, with a preliminary audit indicating that many asthmatic's symptoms are poorly controlled.

Dr Peter Greally, Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician at Tallaght Hospital said the management of asthma in Ireland falls well short of the 'Global Initiative for Asthma'.

Five thousand households will be involved in the study which is a joint initiative between the Asthma Society and a provider of respiratory therapies, Allen & Hanburys.
