Tranmere's highly regarded goalkeeper Joe Murphy has been signed up by Premiership newcomers West Brom.

The 20-year-old Irishman has joined the Birmingham club on a four-year contract after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical at the Hawthorns.

Murphy's deal at Tranmere expired last month but West Brom will still have to pay the division two outfit compensation because the keeper is too young to be available on a free transfer.

West Brom manager Gary Megson told the club's official website, www.wba.co.uk: "With the transfer window closing in August we felt it was important to be strong in the goalkeeping department and I'm pleased we've managed to get Joe.

"We watched him a few times last year and he's one for the future. But although he's a young lad, he's got a fair bit of experience at league level.

"We're now trying to bring other players in."
