Detectives in Belfast have begun a murder investigation following the death in hospital of a man assaulted last weekend.

Mr Thomas Johnston (24) suffered critical head injuries after being attacked in the Shankill area of the city.

He was walking along North Boundary Street early on Sunday when a car pulled up beside him and a passenger got out and started hitting him around the head with a weapon.

A woman with Mr Johnston was also hit across the face by the attacker.
