The RUC in Lurgan, Co Armagh, is treating as attempted murder a gun attack on a Catholic taxi- driver in the town late on Wednesday night.

The driver, who did not want to be identified, said he came under attack after answering a call to a house on the edge of the loyalist Mourneview estate.

He said he heard a number of bangs and later found a bullet lodged in the rear seat of his car.

"I am still shaking, but I wasn't singled out. It could have been any taxi-river. I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time", he said.

The Upper Bann Sinn FΘin MLA, Dr Dara O'Hagan, said the attack was part of an ongoing attempt by anti-agreement unionists to suck republicans back into conflict.

Wednesday night's attack took place close to where a Sunday World journalist, Mr Martin O'Hagan, was shot dead four weeks ago. Police believe Mr O'Hagan was murdered by elements within the LVF.
