Mountaineer gets honorary doctorate

The doyen of Irish mountaineers, Mr Joss Lynam, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Trinity College Dublin.

The doyen of Irish mountaineers, Mr Joss Lynam, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Trinity College Dublin.

The award has been made in recognition of more than 50 years of service by Mr Lynam to hill-walking, mountaineering and the Irish outdoors.

Since 1948, when he was a founder of the Irish Mountaineering Club, Mr Lynam (77) has been prominent in all areas of the sport. The author of several books on the outdoors, he has led climbing expeditions to the Alps, Greenland and the Himalayas. Since 1965, he has lived with his wife Nora and children in Roebuck in Dublin.
