Britain - Garages are giving motorists unacceptably poor service and in some cases the work they do is potentially dangerous, the fair trading watchdog warned yesterday.

Substandard car servicing and repairs were causing 1.3 million extra problems for motorists each year - while the cost of unnecessary work and correcting faults amounted to £170 million (sterling) annually, said the Director General of Fair Trading, Mr John Bridgeman.

Some garages are providing "a critically unsatisfactory service - some of it deemed to be potentially dangerous", he said. "Our overall verdict on the service provided by many large firms, franchised dealers and local garages is that it is unroadworthy and needs a thorough overhaul."
