Motorists have reacted angrily to the New Year price rise at the Westlink toll bridge.

Many motorists have contacted the Automobile Association (AA) to express their disapproval at the toll hike.

From January 1st the cost of the ordinary car toll on the bridge increased from EUR 1.50 to EUR 1.80, a 20 per cent increase, and the fourth increase in just over three years.

According to the AA, the latest price increase is unjustified. "People feel very strongly about this", said the AA's Conor Faughnan. "That bridge is making a fortune ... With the surge in volumes and the recent price increases there is no justification whatever for this enormous hike."

The bridge recorded 31 million transactions in 2004 and has 80,000 daily users, according to National Toll Roads.
