Motor taxation rise criticised

A Government resolution allowing for motor taxation increases was sharply criticised by the Opposition

A Government resolution allowing for motor taxation increases was sharply criticised by the Opposition. The increases were announced last year.

The Minister for the Environment, Mr Dempsey, said motor taxation was paid directly into the local government fund, which was used to finance non-national roads. The Labour spokesman on the environment, Mr Eamon Gilmore, said the way in which the money was distributed discriminated against those areas, mainly urban, where the greatest amount of tax was collected.

The resolution was passed.
