Colin Montgomerie today pulled out of the 132nd Open Championship at Royal St George's.

Montgomerie was four over par after seven holes of his first round when he decided he was unable to continue.

The Scot, who yesterday touted himself as one of the favourites for the tournment has not yet explained why he had to withdraw.

Meanwhile Padraig Harrington has had a round to forget after shooting a four over 75 to leave himself seven shots behind clubhouse leader Henni Otto of South Africa.

Gary Murphy was next of the IRish to emerge onto the first tee and is currently two over par through 13 holes, while Paul McGinley has already dropped a shot after just three.
