Marrakesh - Officials from more than 160 countries haggled yesterday over the fine print of the Kyoto pact to limit global warming, seeking a deal to bring the landmark treaty into force hopefully by next year.

Delegates said a compromise text produced by the chairman of the meeting proved acceptable to the EU and the G77 group of developing countries but was rejected by the "umbrella group", which includes Russia, Japan, Australia and Canada.
