The Hague - The UN war crimes tribunal has formally indicted former Yugoslav president Mr Slobodan Milosevic for atrocities committed during the 1991-1995 war in Croatia, a spokeswoman for the prosecution said yesterday.

The second indictment handed down against Milosevic charges him with war crimes and crimes against humanity. Mr Milosevic is already on trial charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in 1999 in Kosovo.

Ms Carla del Ponte, chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), is also working on a third indictment for genocide, alleged to have been committed during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia. Ms Del Ponte announced last month she had signed the Croatia indictment but it became formal only after being confirmed by one of the tribunal's judges.
