A minute's silence was observed at Croke Park yesterday in tribute to RTÉ's former Gaelic games correspondent, Mick Dunne, who has died aged 73.

Mr Dunne from Clonaslee, Co Laois, worked for the Irish Press for a number of years as its GAA correspondent before joining RTÉ in 1970.

He retained his interest in football and hurling as a commentator for the GAA's official monthly magazine, High Ball. He also had a great interest in handball, which he played until recently.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs Lily Dunne, and his three daughters, Eileen, a newscaster with the station, Una and Myra.

RTÉ's director general, Mr Bob Collins, said Mr Dunne was a highly respected correspondent.

A household name, "he was known to generations of audiences for his committed coverage of the GAA and he was a very important part of the RTÉ sports team".

Mr Collins said audiences would carry "the warmest memories".

The Fine Gael leader, Mr Enda Kenny, said Mr Dunne's death "leaves a deep void within the Gaelic Athletics Association".
