A number of ballot papers were reportedly spoiled by voters who wrote messages in support of bankrupt and jailed businessman Seán Quinn.

Spoiled votes of this nature were reported to be found at count centres in Cavan-Monaghan, Roscommon-South Leitrim and Galway East.

One voter in Cavan wrote: “We want fair play for Seán Quinn.” The Yes vote was carried in the Cavan-Monaghan constituency with a 53.86 per cent Yes and a 46.14 per cent No vote.

A spoiled vote in the Galway East constituency said: “Free Seán Quinn, he’s a good man.”

In Roscommon-South Leitrim “Free Seán Quinn” was written on three ballot papers.

Quinn was jailed for nine weeks on November 2nd by Mrs Justice Elizabeth Dunne for an “outrageous” contempt of court .

Meanwhile, one voter in Citywest, Co Dublin, found a unique way to spoil a vote by stapling a condom to their ballot paper and writing: “If you don’t care for them, don’t have them.”
