Jakarta - The Indonesian opposition leader, Ms Megawati Sukarnoputri, will fly to the West Timor capital, Kupang, today to look at the plight of thousands of refugees who have fled violence in the eastern half of the island, her personal aide said.

Ms Megawati heads the populist Indonesian Democratic PartyStruggle (PDI-P), which won the country's first democratic poll in 44 years in June.

Ms Megawati is the front-runner to win the presidential election in Indonesia in November. The new president will have to oversee the later stages of East Timor's transition to independence. Before the referendum she voiced opposition to independence
