The Green Party MEP, Ms Patricia McKenna, yesterday rejected claims by Fine Gael's bail referendum campaign director, Mr Charles Flanagan, that the No side was "peddling ignorance".
Ms McKenna said reform campaigners were proposing, that the curtailment of civil liberties was necessary to combat crime and that there were "principled and pragmatic reasons for opposing the bail referendum".
"The Government has totally failed to say how it proposes to build safeguards into the legislation to prevent miscarriages of justice or keep suspects locked up for lengthy periods without being brought to trial," she said.
