Winter Olympics:  Ireland's Kirsten McGarry finished 42nd of 51 after the second run of the ladies Slalom at the Winter Olympics in Turin.

The 20 year-old, who has been skiing competitively since the age of nine and competes full time on the European Cup circuit, finished her second run over three seconds slower than her first in a time of 52.79.

With her first run timed at 49.64 the Dubliner totaled one minute 42.43 seconds to finish a full 13 seconds behind eventual gold medal winner Anja Paerson.

The Swedish winner of four World Championships and two World Cups edged Austrian Nicole Hosp into silver by 0.29 seconds with the bronze going to Marlies Schild.

Paerson said: "I set up a goal this year to try and achieve an Olympic gold medal. It is hard when you do all five disciplines but I set up a different training regime so I would peak."

McGarry withdrew from yesterday’s Super G in order to concentrate on this event as well as tomorrow’s Giant Slalom, the first run of which is at 9.30am and the second at 1pm.
