Veteran midfielder Gary McAllister is on the brink of signing a new one-year contract with Liverpool.

The 36-year-old Scot, with 57 caps for his country, has added experience to Liverpool's young side, who have reached the Worthington Cup final.

He signed a one-year deal when he moved from Coventry on a free transfer last summer, and he is expected to put pen to paper on a one-year expansion soon.

"It's fair to say we are very close to agreeing to keep me being here for another year," said McAllister.

"There's not really been a great deal to negotiate, to be honest. I've always hoped to add another season to my contract."

Boss Gerard Houllier has been delighted with McAllister's contribution to Liverpool's campaign.

They are still battling on four fronts for honours, and the Scot, who played in Wednesday's Worthington Cup semi-final victory over Crystal Palace, can expect to be utilised frequently as Liverpool face crucial games in three major cup competitions in the next few weeks.
