Ms Roisin McAliskey will not be prosecuted in Britain in relation to a mortar-bomb attack on a British army barracks in Germany, it was announced yesterday.

There was not enough evidence to justify trying Ms McAliskey (26) for the 1996 attack on the barracks, the Crown Prosecution Service said. There were also fears, given the length of time since the attack, that she could have argued abuse of process.

Ms McAliskey is still wanted for questioning by German police over the attack. They claim she was part of an IRA unit that rented a cottage near the camp.

The British Home Secretary, Mr Jack Straw, caused a political storm two years ago when he ruled she was too ill to be extradited. She could have been prosecuted in the UK under the terms of a European counter-terrorism agreement.
