Algiers - The mayor of a town in north-western Algeria opened fire on demonstrators demanding his resignation, killing one and injuring two others, Algeria's official APS news agency reported.

It said the mayor of Dahra, 120 miles west of Algiers, "besieged inside his home, used his weapon to kill a 34year-old local official and injured two other citizens" on Saturday. The mayor, who was not named, his nephew and two cousins, who also fired at the crowd, were arrested, APS said.
