A libel action by Mrs Maureen Haughey against RTE, arising from a broadcast in 1997 which incorrectly alleged she had left the family home, was settled at the High Court yesterday.

Under the settlement, RTE is to pay the wife of the former Taoiseach an undisclosed sum. It was the second settlement within three days of libel proceedings taken by Mrs Haughey. Last Wednesday she settled an action against the News of the World for undisclosed damages and an apology.

Mr and Mrs Haughey were both in the Four Courts for consultations with their lawyers but were not in Court No 4 when the settlement was announced. They left the building by car soon afterwards.
