The Minister for Education and Science, Mr Martin, told delegates he would announce over the next year a range of initiatives to make sure that more young people stayed in school until they achieved some form of qualification.
He repeated the pledge that every school in the State would have a remedial service by the time the Government left office. He added that a major new green paper on adult literacy would be published next week. There was a need to focus on the large number of adults who could not read properly or had a very low level of even basic skills.
