Nelson Mandela was awarded the freedom of Dublin 10 years ago, on July 1st, 1990, and now he is coming back for the first time. It is unlikely he will attempt to graze sheep in Stephen's Green, as the latest recipients of the honour, Bono and Edge did a couple of weeks ago. The retired president of South Africa will be here with his new wife, Gracia Machel, to deliver the Independent Newspapers lecture at Trinity College on April 12th and to be conferred with an honorary degree.
