Gardaí in Co Donegal are investigating an incident in which a 30-year-old man was shot in the leg on Friday evening.

The man - who lives in the area - was shot in the leg at about 6.40pm on Friday, a Garda spokeswoman said. The incident occurred at Momeen, a townland between St Johnston and Raphoe.

The victim had just returned in his van to the mobile home where he lives with his partner and two young children. When he reached his driveway and stepped out of his van, a car pulled up behind him.

Two men wearing balaclavas then approached him. One man shot him just above the right knee-cap and the second struck him on the arm with a blunt instrument.

The attackers then returned to their car and fled the scene. The victim was aided by a passer-by, who alerted gardaí at Raphoe.

He was brought to Letterkenny hospital where he spent the night before being discharged on Saturday.

Gardaí at Raphoe are appealing for anyone who may have information about the shooting to contact them at 074-9145114. In particular, they wish to speak to anyone who may have noticed a car in suspicious circumstances between 6pm and 7pm on Friday.

A Garda source said it was believed the victim was followed home from work on the night of the attack.

Gardaí are following a number of lines in inquiry, but say they have not yet established a motive for the shooting.
