A motorcyclist was seriously injured last night during a practice session for the prestigious North West 200 road race.

He was reported to be in a critical condition in hospital after crashing on the course in Portstewart, Co Derry.

It is understood the rider, from Northern Ireland, was in a superbike practice for Saturday’s racing, when he came off at Station Road.

Last year legendary rider Robert Dunlop died during a practice session for the North West 200 where he had a record 15 wins.

A coroner recorded that he died from multiple injuries after being thrown from his bike when the engine seized at almost 200mph.
