A shop employee is seriously ill in hospital following a robbery in Dublin last night.

A shop employee is seriously ill in hospital following a robbery in Dublin last night.

Another man in his 30s entered a shop on James's Street, Dublin 8, at about 9.50pm and threatened two male staff members with a syringe.

A struggle took place, gardaí were alerted, and an arrest was made.One of the staff members, in his 30s collapsed at the scene and was taken to to St James's Hospital, where he is in a serious condition.

The suspect was also taken to St James's for treatment to a leg injury.

Elsewhere, a man appeared in court this morning following an aggravated burglary in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, early yesterday morning.

The man, in his 20s, came before a special sitting of Loughrea District Court in relation to an incident shortly before 2am at a house on Jubilee Street in the town.

He was charged with burglary and was remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison.
