Gardaí have begun an investigation after a man's body was found in Co Westmeath last night.

Gardaí have begun an investigation after a man's body was found in Co Westmeath last night.

The 54-year-old man was found near a railway line in Athlone at about 8pm yesterday. It is believed he died after being struck by a train.

A Garda spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious, but an investigation was underway.

The man was taken to Mullingar hospital where a post mortem will be carried out today.
