The Garda in Dundalk have released a 20-year-old man after a shipment of smuggled cigarettes was seized during a search of a lorry on the Dundalk to Armagh road yesterday.

It is believed that the shipment was organised by the Real IRA, and could have netted the dissident republican group around €500,000 if it had reached the North.

Several million cigarettes were concealed in rolls of carpet being carried in 40-foot container and lorry.

The man was questioned overnight before being released this morning.
