Man questioned over Co Monaghan hit-and-run

Gardaí are trying to identify the victim of a hit-and-run whose body was found on the side of a Co Monaghan road this morning.

The body was found early this morning at Gortkeegan, hours after it is believed he was knocked down and killed between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m.

In a follow-up operation a man was arrested in Co Monaghan in connection with the incident. He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Monaghan Garda station. A car was also recovered and is being examined by Garda technical experts.

The victim is described as 6 ft, of heavy build, with short fair/sandy hair. He was wearing blue Levi jeans, black Levi shoes and a short navy jacket. Members of the public with clues as to the identity of the man are asked to contact Monaghan gardaí at 047 77200.

In a separate incident in Co Monaghan, one man was killed and four other injured in a single car crash this morning.

The crash happened at Nafferty, on the main Carrickmacross to Ballybay Road, at 3.40 a.m., when the car hit a tree.

The 27-year-old driver of the car was killed and four of his male passengers were hurt. One of the injured is in a critical condition in hosptial. The dead man has not yet been named.
