Man left critically ill after city attack

Dublin detectives are investigating another serious assault which has left a man critically ill in hospital

Dublin detectives are investigating another serious assault which has left a man critically ill in hospital. The victim, in his 40s, was attacked on Marlborough Street at around 8.15 p.m. on Saturday.

The attack is the second of its kind in as many weeks.

Mr James Kavanagh (36), from Malahide, sustained fatal head injuries after he was assaulted near a bus stop on Eden Quay on the north side of the Liffey just before nine o'clock on Tuesday, May 27th. He died three days later.

The married father was buried last week. Gardaí have identified, from CCTV images, a group of three people they wish to question.

They believe the group may have been involved in a dispute with the man just before the confrontation which led to his death. No one has yet been arrested.

That attack followed the attack on Grafton Street of Sligo librarian Mr Barry Duggan in April. Mr Duggan has since made a full recovery. Three men have been questioned about that incident and a file has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

In the latest attack on Saturday the victim suffered serious head injuries and last night remained in a critical condition in Beaumont Hospital.

Gardaí in Store Street are trying to make contact with a woman they believe was in the area at the time. In her early 20s, she was pushing a buggy and wearing a white woollen jumper.

Gardaí are appealing for anybody with information to contact Store Street gardaí on 6668000, or on the force's confidential number on 1800 666 111.
