A man has been killed in a knife attack in Co Galway.

A man has been killed in a knife attack in Co Galway.

The incident occurred in the early hours of today in a house on Dominick Street, Portumna.

The 43-year-old victim was rushed to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, where he was pronounced dead.

A 45-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing and is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Loughrae Garda Station.

A garda spokesman said the scene has been preserved for a technical examination. The state Pathologist's office has been informed and a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
