Man killed in Derry hammer assault

A man has died following a suspected assault in Derry last night.

A man has died following a suspected assault in Derry last night.

A second man was seriously injured after the incident in the Bayview Terrace area, police said. It is understood the victims were beaten with a hammer.

One man, who was also injured, was arrested. Police are treating the death as murder.

The dead man has been named as Paddy Harkin.

The injured man was initially treated in Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry before being transferred to the Royal Victoria

Hospital in Belfast where he is in a critical condition.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness expressed his “heartfelt and deepest sympathies” to Mr Harkin’s family and offered his support to the family of the  man in hospital.

“I know Paddy and I must say he was a very inoffensive man and I was shocked and saddened this morning when I was told of his tragic death,” he said.
