One man was killed and another injured in a fire which broke out in a house in Swords, north Co Dublin, yesterday morning. Three men, all thought to be workers in Dublin airport, were asleep in the house they shared at 62 Cherry Park, Swords, when one woke and discovered smoke at about 2.30 a.m. He raised the alarm and the fire brigade was called.
Four units of the fire brigade fought the blaze and firemen rescued the two other occupants of the house. Three ambulances brought the men to Beaumont Hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead. The man who raised the alarm was uninjured, and the condition of the third man is described as serious. It is believed that the fire started in one of the bedrooms. Gardai have not ruled out foul play, they do not think this is likely.
The house was sealed off yesterday to enable Garda technical experts to examine the scene. A Garda spokesman said the name of the dead man, who is English, will not be released until today.
