A man who slashed the faces of his uncle and cousin when they had gathered where a bare knuckle fight was to take place, was yesterday jailed for 3½ years.

Trim Circuit Court heard that Michael McDonagh (26), of Ardkill Place, Ballinagh, Co Cavan, had not been taking part in the fight but had been among the 20 or so people who gathered for it.

The victims were John Power (39) and his son Eddie (15) and they had been there to support the Powers, Judge Michael O’Shea was told.

The injured men were an uncle and cousin of the accused, who pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to them at the Glebe, Kells, on September 10th, 2010.
