A man has been jailed for hiding a gun that was earlier used during a mass brawl at the Smithfield Horse Fair.

John Keniry (43) Rainsford Avenue, Thomas Court, was given the job of disposing of the revolver after it had been fired indiscriminately into a crowd at the monthly market. He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of a .22 calibre Webley revolver on Oliver Bond Street on March 6th, 2011. There were four live rounds in it after two had been fired at the fair.

He had not been directly involved in the shooting.

Judge Martin Nolan noted that Keniry was a vulnerable person but he rejected a defence application for a suspended sentence as “a step too far.”
