A man was in a "serious condition" in hospital tonight after he shot himself in an incident in Fitzgibbon Street Garda station in Dublin.
The man was rushed to the Mater Hospital after he walked into the north Dublin city centre station and shot himself the upper body at 5.30 p.m.
Nobody else was injured in the incident.
A garda spokesman told ireland.com, officers are investigation the incident where the man, who has not been identified, walked up to the counter in the public office of the station and pulled out a handgun. He then shot himself in front of three gardai and a member of the public.
It is believed he shot himself in the head, the spokesman said. The man was being treated in hospital where his condition is reported to be serious.
The man is believed to be 30-35 years of age. He was described as being 5ft 10" of medium build with brown receding hair.
"He had about four to five days of beard growth and was wearing a brown corduroy jacket with a blue jumper and cream strips underneath," the spokesman said.
The station was closed and front office was sealed off immediately. A forensic team from the Garda Technical Bureau was called in to examine the scene.
Detectives are now interviewing the four witnesses and have appealed for information on the identity of the man.
