A man is in a critical condition at Cork University Hospital (CUH) today after an altercation at Lower Oliver Plunkett Street in the city yesterday evening.

The assault occurred at 6.30pm near the Clarion Hotel. A Polish national (31) was taken to CUH having sustained what are believed to be serious head injuries.

An Irish national in his late 20s has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Bridewell Street Garda station. The scene of the assault has been forensically examined.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Lower Oliver Plunkett Street between 6pm and 6.45pm yesterday who has any information to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021-4522000.
