A man was injured when a 120 tonne mobile crane crashed through a roof at the Odlums Mills in the Dublin docks yesterday. The operator was taken by car to hospital when the boom of the Demag crane, which appeared fully extended, fell through a building.
The crane belonged to Kavanagh Crane Hire and was hired to Shamrock Communications, a company sub contracted by Esat Digifone to build telecommunications masts for its GSM mobile Phone service.
A transmitter is being built on the roof of the mill. No one at the site would comment and refused even to say at what time the incident took place.
Inside the mill complex, the crane could be seen with its boom embedded in the roof of a building that appeared to be a warehouse. The extensions, which take the weight when the crane is working, were out, and the wheels in the air. The operators cab was badly crushed into the ground when the crane fell forward.
