A 37-year-old man is in hospital in the North after setting himself alight outstide a police station in Larne, Co Antrim last night.

The man had been sitting outside the station while police officers tried to talk to him.

He subsequently poured petrol over himself and set it alight with a match, leaving him engulfed in flames.

A police spokesman said the man then got up and started to run off but was wrestled to the ground by officers who extinguished the flames.

Police officers put out the flames. The man is said in a stable condition in Belfast's Royal Victoria.
