A man who was arrested in Dublin yesterday in connection with the discovery of a "viable" explosive device remains in Garda custody.

The man, aged in his late 20s, was arrested during a planned operation by members of the Garda's Emergency Response Unit, on Pigeon House Road in Ringsend, on Dublin Bay. Gardaí used a Taser weapon during the arrest.

The explosive device - understood to be a pipe bomb - was discovered during the arrest.

The Army's bomb disposal unit was called to the scene shortly after 2pm yesterday, said a Defence Forces spokesman. The device was made safe and removed from the site five hours later. "It was a viable device," said the spokesman.
