A man has been charged in connection with an incident in which an Irish woman suffered serious injuries when she was hit by a traffic cone in Edinburgh.

The man (29) walked into a police station last night after seeing a TV appeal. He was arrested and is expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court later today.

Kate Flannery (23), from Galway, was walking below Edinburgh's 12-metre high George IV Bridge early on Sunday morning when she was struck by the cone.

She was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary but later moved to a specialist spinal injuries unit at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.

Ms Flannery, who is from Beechcourt, Salthill, in Galway, is studying occupational therapy in Edinburgh. She had been on a night out when the incident happened.

Hospital staff described her condition today as "serious".
