A man in his early 40s was arrested this evening in connection with the shooting of a 25-year-old man at Burrin Road in Carlow in the early hours of this morning.

The man was arrested during a search of a house in the town and is being held under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act at Carlow garda station.

According to gardaí, the victim answered a knock at his front door on the Burrin Road at about 2.25am and was shot a number of times.

The man, who suffered injuries to his knee and stomach, was taken to St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny.

His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
