A Dublin man was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court yesterday of the knifepoint rape of his former girlfriend at his home last August. He was remanded in continuing custody to March 24th. At the end of the case, the 37-year-old victim indicated to the media that she wanted the defendant, Joe Molloy, named. She did not want her own name published.

The court was told that Molloy told Det Garda Denis Kenny during an interview that he did not think he had raped his girlfriend.

Asked if it was rape for a man to have intercourse with a woman against her will even when there was no violence, Molloy replied: "No. I think that after a relationship of five years this would be normal."

Molloy (42), a separated father of five, was convicted of rape, aggravated sexual assault and sexual assault in his home at Oldchurch Crescent, Clondalkin, on the evening of August 18th, 1997.
