Gardaí in Co Mayo have released a man who was being questioned in connection with the death of a farmer from the Erris peninsula.

The body of John Gaughan (72) was found in his driveway by a neighbour on Sunday.

A postmortem revealed that Mr Gaughan, who lived alone at Glosh, Blacksod, had serious injuries.

A local man (26) was arrested yesterday and held for questioning under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act at Belmullet Garda station. His period of detention was extended during the day.

He was released last night, and a file is being be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr Gaughan's funeral takes place today at Aughleam cemetery following Mass at midday.
