A man has been charged with arson and causing grievous bodily harm after two PSNI officers received stab wounds during a house fire in Co Armagh.

One officer was treated in hospital for a serious stabbing injury to his hand, while a second sustained a minor wound during the incident at the house in Markethill.

The officers were injured after they responded to reports that a man was in a house in the town's Bunker Hill area and was attempting to set it on fire.

They found the house alight and a man inside.

The officers were injured in a struggle as they tried to remove the man.

The fire service extinguished the fire before police were able to re-enter the house and remove the man by force.

The man, 39, is due to appear at Newry Magistrates Court.
