The Garda’s Organised Crime Unit has arrested a man who was walking down a suburban street in north Co Dublin with a bag containing two sub-machine guns.
The man, who is in his 40s, was stopped and searched in a planned operation in the Applewood residential area of Swords on Saturday at 8pm.
When his bag was searched, it was found to contain the guns.
Gardaí also found ammunition in the bag.

The suspect, who is from Dublin’s south inner city, is not regarded as a senior gangland figure, and gardaí believe he was transporting the guns on behalf of a north Dublin criminal gang.
He was taken to Swords Garda station, where he was still being detained last night under the provisions of section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
