Man arrested on drink driving suspicion after fatal crash

A man was arrested at the scene of a fatal crash in Dublin's Stepaside on suspicion of drink driving, it was confirmed today.

Gardai at Stepaside Garda Station are speaking to a number of witnesses over the collision between two Mercedes cars which happened around 1am yesterday.

The man who was arrested was brought to Dun Laoghaire Garda Station. Where he was processed and subsequently released.

Officers said shortly before the crash on the Enniskerry Road, two female pedestrians were injured two-miles away by a large-dark car, also possibly a Mercedes.

It is believed a large number of people are being questioned to see if there are any links between the two incidents.

The garda forensic team are currently examining a car involved in the head-on collision. The elderly driver, who died in the crash, has been named as 71-year-old Gordon Geary of Orwell Road, Rathgar.

A 70-year-old female passenger, believed to be his wife, is being treated for broken bones in St Vincent's hospital but her condition is not life-threatening.

One of the two women, who were hit at the junction of Blackglen Road and Woodside Road around 12.50am, is still in a critical condition.

The pedestrians were injured after a car failed to stop. The 17-year-old woman is in a serious condition in Beaumont Hospital, while the 19-year-old is in a stable condition in St Vincent's Hospital.
